Sandblasting and Abrasive Blasting Services
Sandblasting is a specialty trade, and it should be treated like one. It requires dedicated equipment, trained operators, containment planning, and PPE that goes well beyond what a painting crew normally carries. Chroma Coatings is trained, equipped, and qualified to perform it, and we do not subcontract it out to whoever is available.
We provide abrasive blasting for commercial, industrial, and institutional clients throughout North Carolina and the East Coast, and we travel for larger industrial projects.
Sandblasting
When Sandblasting Is the Right Answer
Rust and Corrosion Removal
Structural steel, handrails, tanks, equipment frames, and exposed metal accumulate rust that cannot be painted over. Abrasive blasting removes corrosion down to sound metal and establishes the surface profile a high performance coating needs to bond correctly. Coating over rust is not a repair. It is a delay.
Paint and Coating Removal
Failed, peeling, or incompatible coatings have to come off before a new system goes on. Blasting removes multiple layers efficiently and uniformly, which hand tools and chemical strippers rarely do on large surfaces.
Masonry and Brick Restoration
One of the most common requests we get is stripping paint from brick to return a building to its original exposed look. This is delicate work. Brick is softer than most people assume, and aggressive blasting destroys the face permanently. We select media and pressure to remove the coating without eroding the substrate, and we test in an inconspicuous area before proceeding.
Surface Preparation Before High Performance Coatings
Most coating failures trace back to preparation. When a specification calls for a defined surface profile, blasting is the only reliable way to achieve it.
Equipment, Training, and Containment
Abrasive blasting produces significant dust, debris, and noise, and it demands respiratory protection and controlled work zones. Our approach includes:
- Media selected for the substrate, ranging from aggressive profiles on steel to gentler media on masonry and wood
- Containment systems to control dust migration in occupied buildings and adjacent work areas
- Supplied air respirators, blast hoods, and full PPE for operators
- Debris collection and disposal handled as part of the scope
- Coordination with facility staff on noise, access, and scheduling
Immediate Coating After Blasting
Freshly blasted steel begins to flash rust quickly, sometimes within hours depending on humidity. Because Chroma Coatings performs both the blasting and the coating, we control that window. There is no gap between one contractor finishing and another mobilizing, which is where a great deal of prep work gets wasted.
Applications We Serve
- Structural steel, mezzanines, and equipment in Industrial facilities
- Handrails, stairs, and guarding requiring OSHA safety coatings
- Storage tanks, piping, and process equipment
- Historic and commercial masonry restoration
- Parking structures and exposed concrete
- Metal buildings and exterior architectural steel
Safety Standards on Blasting Projects
Our superintendents hold OSHA 30 and all employees hold OSHA 10, with specialized training and respiratory protection specific to abrasive blasting. Every project begins with a hazard assessment, a containment plan, and a toolbox talk covering the specific site conditions.
